LED VOLUME & Virtual Production

Spectre Studios offers Australia's first and only end-to-end Virtual Production pipeline leveraging Unreal Engine for in-camera VFX. We have been fortunate enough to work closely with our production partners that include ARRI, NVIDIA, Big Picture Events and HP to develop a variety of solutions for delivering real-time Virtual Production for productions of different budget sizes.

Some of our work has been highlighted in the most recent Virtual Production Sizzle Reel created by Unreal Engine.

WHAT DOES VP LOOK LIKE WHEN USING UE4?

UE4 PREVIZ
LED VOLUME FOOTAGE

Below is a small clip where we quickly blocked a shot in UE4 with a scene that we replicated in a small test with the LED Volume. When using LED volumes it's paramount to do as much blocking as possible in previz to better understand the limitations in coverage for your shoot.

An obvious benefit of using UE4 to do previz is that you can use the same scene for production and then for post-production also. The ability to see your scene and your LED volume in relation to your production needs is the power of real-time Virtual Production.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The platform makes use of a combination of immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality as well as CGI and game-engine technologies, allowing filmmakers to “see their scenes unfold as they are composed and captured on set”

We have found this a great tool for a variety of uses.

SIMTRAV

Reduce the risk and complexities of driving shoots by utilizing LED for both lighting and displayed environments. Most travelling shots using either 3D environments or footage that's been put through our conversion pipeline for LED parallax can produce amazing results.

LOCATION

Shoot at anytime of the day with full control over your location environment lighting. Whether your location is a 3D environment, a photogrammetry scan or an abstract landscape, you have full control of the world and how you want to shoot it.

SPORTS DRINK TVC

The concept of this shoot was to show a stylised, sports drink TVC concept similar to a Gatorade or Nike style environment.

The scene uses two practical lights on set.

This shoot took:
2hrs to block, light and shoot.
A 4m x 3m LED wall
LED tile - Samsung VM026R-I 2.6 pixel pitch
Filmed on Alexa 2k

SPORTS DRINK BTS

A sneek peek behind the scenes of one of our first tests shooting on LED

APOC - SHORT CONCEPT

The concept of this shot was to demonstrate a “High concept” film style like Mad Max or Dark City. The aim was to show a high concept stylised location with dynamic lighting in real time.

We achieved this with:

1hr to block, light and shoot.
A 4m x 3m LED wall
LED tile - Samsung VM026R-I 2.6 pixel pitch
Filmed on Alexa 2k

WYRMWOOD KILL ROOM

This was our first test using a created environment from the cult horror classic Wyrmwood. This was the first time testing parallax and frustum against a 3D environment.

This test took:
2hrs to block, light and shoot.
A 4m x 3m LED wall
LED tile - Samsung VM026R-I 2.6 pixel pitch
Filmed on Alexa 2k
